recap 8/6/09

Well…not a true recap. I spent a large part of the meeting using a borrowed cat-5 crossover cable with a reverse crossover plug (thanks Ted for the rescue!) trying to figure out why when I brought my acer aspire one out of sleep, I lost wireless. Beat my head against that brick for quite a while – tried a previous kernel (couldn’t remember if the last update had included a kernel update), switched drivers, the works, nothing. After something like my fifth frustrated reboot, I went back to where it all started and closed the lid, waited a few seconds, then reopened the lid.

You guessed it. Wireless popped back up.

Speaking of Ted, he had a pretty cool demo of samba+ldap+dns to trick out a windows server into logging into it as a domain controller (put your white hat back on, the point of the demo was using open source tools to do the same work as a windows domain controller, not the trickery of it). Pretty nifty demo.
