Thursday word count

Today is a busy day – work, gym, and yes, writing! Before you chide me for this word count – I have a scene I’m working with where on my first pass a few days ago, I jotted down about 2-300 words worth of…stuff. Not really writing, but a lot more depth than just an outline. Kind of like a synopsis with dialogue. So yesterday and today I’ve spent most of my writing time converting that initial 300 words into what is so far a 1.2k+ word scene, and then cutting out the parts I’ve rewritten. So according to Scrivener, my word count rises up, then gets dashed down against the rocks when I cut out the surplus words (since, legitimately, they do detract from my total word count, even if they aren’t part of what was added today). I just felt like I needed to explain that before I said I added another 628 words today, for a grand total of 49,577 so far.

So close to that 50k mark, I know, which means just over 10k from my initial goal still! And I still have all of October to make that 60k goal to boot (my required word count per day is currently down at 341 words thanks to that burst on Sunday, followed by a few 1k word days). This is all rather exciting to me, and I’ve started thinking about what I’m going to do when I hit the final words and can safely say the first rough draft of the novel is done. I imagine there will be a few steps at that point:

  1. sleep
  2. veg
  3. sleep
  4. read through and correct for consistency
  5. read through and rewrite for readability
  6. read through and correct for consistency again because I messed that up in step 5 when I cut 50 pages and added in 97 pages of text.
  7. start writing my Dear Agent letters
That about covers it!
