Sunday’s monstrous word count, and a matter of perspective

Salutations and good mornings!

I know, there was no blog post yesterday – needless to say, the word count total was somewhere in the zero ballpark. Sad, but true, and there is some measure of shame in that. Its not like I didn’t have opportunity – I was home alone in the early afternoon, and it was just me and the younger two most of the evening. But somehow I got distracted, writing book reviews for YAFG, putting together a bookcase for the girls, and all in all just taking care of things.

So this morning, I have some word count. I don’t think I’m done for today, but I’m done for now,and figure I should post these numbers while they’re still fresh. Maybe there might be an update later this evening, but just in case. In something of a stormy session I’ve beaten out of my head 6,471 words (I know, right?!?) bringing the words written so far up to 46,174. Obligatory graphic:

That’s a butt load of words, even for me. I said that I would keep this going until I hit 60k, and if I hit that early I would up the limit. Doing some math (250 words per page, a revised target size of 350 pages) means I should probably be aiming for more like 90k, which should probably be more like

– but not yet. Not ready quite yet for that level of commitment, since that would change my minimum daily word count to 1220 words a day. I know what you’re thinking – I just hammered out a huge share of that, why not? Because I’m a realist, and because I’m a known slacker. But I do think I’m on a good track for hitting my 60k goal.

In a completely unrelated vein, I’m sure you heard this week that Amazon is making Kindle books available through public libraries – and we know how much I love my Kindle, so I gave it a whirl. The selection wasn’t great, at least not through the local public library’s interface, but then again the program has been in action for a week, give it time. What was impressive was how it all works. I’m assuming this will be a typical scenario, but basically you go to your public library’s website, follow a link to a third party they’ve partnered with, and browse the books. You’re limited to how many and how long you can have the books for, but you put your order in, and when its available (in my case, I tried out a sequel to a book I recently panned) you get a link, which whisks you away to a customized page on Amazon where the book is added to your Kindle library (temporarily). So it comes to your Kindle like a real, legitimate Kindle book, but without any money exchanging hands. Pretty darned nifty!
