Less is more when fresh is best

What does that even mean? I admit, it sounds like a crazy mantra to me too, but its how we’ve been living the vita loca at casa Cummings the last month or so.

About a month and a half ago, I stopped drinking soda. I didn’t set out to not drink any, but thanks to circumstance I found myself out of reach of any for a few days. I had water, I had coffee and tea, I was good. Only…when I had the opportunity to have soda again, I didn’t. I was ok without it. I didn’t give up caffeine – that would be insanity – but soda, I’m ok with.

The girls enjoying the Farmer's MarketAt about the same time, we (as a family) decided to take the plunge and live a bit healthier. We had already planned on supplementing our groceries with the produce of our garden, but this was going a step further. We signed up for Dominion Harvest, which is a biweekly delivery of fresh, local vegetables, eggs, and such.  But that’s every other week, and we needed food, so we also started going to the Farmer’s Market.

Imagine it: 8, 9am on a Saturday, and the Cummings clan is marching out to the Farmer’s Market every week. For over a month now.

And we’re eating better as a result, that’s the crazy part. We’ve started adapting our diet and food planning around what we can buy and what’s in season, not around some long distance whim.

Fresh bread! And then we took the final plunge – we’ve started making our own breads. I know, bread isn’t exactly the most expensive item on the grocery list, but baking it ourselves tastes better, is a bit healthier (generally speaking), and is actually a little cheaper. Plus, it tastes better – and did I mention how good it tastes?

Not sure what that means, or how far this will go. Last year we dropped cable, this year we’re eating healthier. What could be next?
