Sometimes it just happens

It’s not too often a story crams it’s way down your throat and out your fingers. The last time a story came so easily was Dark Lord Rising, and I didn’t expect it to happen again any time soon. Usually it takes a lot of straining and ushering to get a story to come together. Least of all, I didn’t expect it to be in the same world, with the same cast (more or less), as Dark Lord.

Yet there I was, in the shower yesterday morning, when another tale of the Captain and his Regulars introduced itself. I ran downstairs, pulled my laptop out of it’s bag and jotted down a few notes.

Note: there was a small time lapse while I dried off and dressed, all the while repeating phrases in my head so I wouldn’t forget them. No young innocence was damaged in this act.

Then I spent the whole day avoiding any thoughts that might invoke it. The last thing I wanted was to have stray bits of dialog and scenery interrupting me all day. The wouldn’t be good for day job productivity, and certainly not good during a commute. I let that happen last time and it was awkward pulling into parking lots every five minutes so I could safely jot down another piece of the story.

Last night, I sat down and started writing this new tale. I didn’t get far, just the first thousand words, but *wow* is it exhilarating when a story tracks you down. Working title is Captain and the Tan Eel, although (despite the obvious laugh in the title) I’m trying not to make this funny like the last Captain story.

Or at least not as funny.

  1. I love it when a story comes together…

Oh wait, that’s not my line. 🙂
