Welcome, February

Welcome to February! That month nestled in the heart of winter here in the northern hemisphere, and the warm side of January usually, but still before the welcoming spring warmth of March. This is a  month that is traditionally littered with countdowns in my youth. The countdown to Easter typically begins in February, following Ash Wednesday (and betraying my Catholic upbringing). February was also always a nice way to begin the countdown to my birthday (which is in March). Except for leap years, I was always fascinated how the date of my birthday (the 17th) always fell on the same day of the week two months in a row. But then, birthdays always had other countdowns associated with them. February may mark the point where I could begin the 4 week count (less than a month to go until cake and presents and all for me!), but I always took special pleasure in that last week before a birthday, announcing that this was my last Monday at age X, or my last Wednesday, etc.

But I’ve digressed, because we were talking about February. As an adult, February has a few more significances for me these days. This past week leading into February has had the three year anniversary of my hospital stay for congestive heart failure. I’m told this is a dour thing and it shouldn’t be held up to an annual reminder, but if I don’t remember, how will I avoid it in the future? Of course, part of that reaction may be because this last week was also the 20th anniversary of my first date with my wife. All of that before the month of lovers and hearts, according to the greeting card manufacturers!

So welcome to February, the month jammed in between the good stuff. This month on the blog I hope to entertain you with some more recounts of my writing (closing in on 60k in the current WIP and realizing that it will be longer than that before the first draft is done), as well as continuing my new series of B5 rewatches, which we began this past week with the pilot episode.

January saw 23 blog posts and a writing total of 35,247 words of fiction. If I could maintain those kinds of numbers through the rest of the year…wow! But now we must start getting ready for the final performance of Aladdin at the kids’ school – our oldest is the world’s best baker in the first act of the play 😉
