And so ends July.

This week, I return to the regular grind of driving into the office every day. I wish I could say that with more enjoyment, but I can’t lie. Its a great job, I love the people, love the job, yada yada yada, but having tasted the sweet life of being able to work 14 hour days (oh, the privilege!) and still managing to accomplish things in my personal life, I’m not exactly holding my breath with anticipation at going back to 2 hours in the car each day.

I did manage to get some things accomplished, though. I finally finished that novel, which in a lot of ways was like lifting a great burden off of me, um, writeringly(?). Obviously, my power and mastery over words hasn’t improved, even if I did finish. Even more astounding to my caved in little mind was the fact that once that was off my shoulders, a new story started germinating. A beautiful story, filled with magic and love and deception and action and everything that makes us happy to lose two hours in front of a screen for a movie. Getting that written, there’s the challenge.

I also got into the routine (soon to be tested) of going to the gym. Paying someone to be mean to me at the gym has certainly helped. As luck would have it, she’s on vacation my first week back on the commute, which means my incentive (avoid being sternly spoken too by nice lady) is minimized. Here’s hoping that doesn’t falter too much.

Finally, this last month I’ve experimented with being socially segregated. I didn’t give up the social media, not all together, but I did sever a tie between twitter and facebook. Sadly, this meant my friends who only see me on facebook have no idea if I’m alive or dead. Part of that severance has been using a browser other than Rockmelt. I know, what’s a browser go to do with it? You’d be surprised. Rockmelt, based off of Chrome, keeps facebook and twitter embedded in its interface. Sounds overexposed, I realize, but the end result is actually kind of nice – its easy to keep up on both social networks. I’ll be heading back to Rockmelt now that my time is less free, as well as re-enabling the cross over between my facebook and twitter accounts. My tweets will make less sense to my facebook only friends, but hey, that’s the price of progress.

Out of all of this, what I enjoyed most, even more than not having a commute, was being around with the kids. Its been like a really long weekend, where Daddy-o still needs to do some work, but can glance over and ask who said you could have a chocolate popsicle at nine in the morning?!?

Right. I did when I ate the box of cookies and needed a bribe. Carry on. 😉
