Bitten by a story

hasty notesWell, it was bound to happen, but wow, what a rush this is. Last night, I had an idea for a short story. Not my normal avenue, its a quick fantasy story about the last Elf in a very LOTR inspired world, after the fall of a Dark Lord.

My fingers flew until my eyes couldn’t be kept open any more. Over three thousand words so far, but I told myself, I’d wait to work on it today until I took care of some things. So I ran out to run some errands, forcing myself to avoid adding to the story, to even think about it.

Normally when I’m in the car, I have my voice recorder. But since I was just going around town, I decided to leave it (and its dead battery) behind. I also usually have a notebook in my pocket, but apparently I left it at work for the long weekend. Go figure.

With perfect timing, I was struck by more bits of dialog and scene as I drove from place to place today. The above picture are the stretches of dialog I wrote on my steering wheel at each parking space.

I don’t know how to explain it. I’ve been writing (well, trying to) for years, but its been a long time since I felt this kind of fire, this sensation of being struck between the eyes by a complete story waiting to be put down. And the scary thing? Its got a bit of humor. Humor! From me! I’ve never written anything I thought would be construed as humorous, but there it is. And its beautiful. I’m probably just high on the smell of roasting keystrokes,  but I think this may be one of the best things I’ve ever written.

So, like, I guess I should go and finish it now, so you all can decide too. Leave a comment if you want a read, I trust most of you, and I know where to find the rest of you 😉

  1. The sad thing is I have thought of it…and i have yet to check to see if my phone has one…I also thought of calling my wife and dictating to her over the phone, but somehow I don’t think that would be appreciated…
