[WIP] Progress for 7/8

I like following the blogs of other, more established authors as I find their anecdotes both interesting and amusing. Jay Lake has been a nice inspiration with his daily writing progriss reports, something I'd do (he only posts a line or two usually) if I thought of it long enough.

Last week he reported

4,800 words in 1.75 hours whilst in transit to California. Manuscript at 70,700 words. WIPs will resume tomorrow.

Let me just say, *wow*. First, because in 1.75 hours he wrote twice as much as I've done at my best, but also because if you go back and look at the subject line for the post, you see he's on day 16 of writing this novel. DAY 16??? Cripes, I've been working on the Dreaming Pools for a few months now and I only just past the 70k mark.

Speaking of which - hit 76K this morning, hope to have finish jotting down the closing to book one this evening, tomorrow at the latest. I'd say this is an occasion for a special drink and a smokem if you gottem, but to be honest, once I finish up book one is when I have to go back and actually start writing it.

No, seriously. Its felt like writing all along, fun and exciting and exhilarating and pulling words from the maw of the muse, but when I go back and read samples I see horrendous gaps, jumps, and stand out in the headlights flaws that make what I've done so far just a really well fleshed out outline. On the upside, with our decision yesterday to begin the next major home improvement, a new roof, our complete lack of funds in life should afford me plenty of opportunity to redraft this novel and start work on the next before we can afford another big expenditure, like happy meals. (minus the vacation in August, which has already been budgeted).

So, today's drawn out post is to state: 76K and still trucking towards the finish line.

About mcummings

Michael is happily married and the proud father of three girls. He acknowledges that that means that as soon as they hit their teens, the bathroom will be lost forever and his hypertension will go through the roof as he hunts down a shotgun. In the meantime, he enjoys tinkering with Linux (former Gentoo dev, w00t), fixing his frankenparts PC, and attempting to write stories that are worthy of reading (a ways to go on that one). Its nice to have aspirations at least :)
