Aw, Smurfette

Launch Day — by CRISTI BALANESCU

Interesting article in this month’s Clarkesworld about the role of women in genre fiction, including a long discussion on women in urban fantasy.

The take away for me was whether or not I was falling into the same “traps” in my WIP – a strong female lead who’s so much one of the boys that she really is just a boy in a dress. I hope future readers of my book see both of my female leads for what they are – women who kick ass because they are individuals, not because they were typecast or convenient to the story.

Bah!

As an aside – if you aren’t a Clarkesworld citizen, why the heck not? Yes, yes, both the e-zine and the podcasts are free, but if you enjoy the content, a few bucks a month keeps the good stories, excellent talents, and the Voice of Clarkesworld streaming to us. (I subscribe on the Kindle for both convenience and to show my support).

I found Ekaterina’s article a worthy read and highly recommend it. Hit me up on facebooktwitter or google+ if you want to talk about it (yes, there was a tinge of regret at having comments shut down there – but only a twinge, since I don’t miss the 30+ spam messages that usually clog the filters each morning).
