Daily Round Up, 2/7/08

Just a quick round up for today. Most of the feeds this morning seemed to be rehashes of what the other feeds put up yesterday (or earlier), meaning it was a lot of repeat junk that I didn't want to read the first time around.

  • Starting off with a bang, I have a soft spot for steampunk, so this Make article was worth it if only for the pictures of the steampunk keyboard :)
  • In the ongoing Scientology debates (is this only a phenomenon of the interweb?), questions are being asked on whether Will Smith is converting to Scientology. Except for that crazy video of Tom Cruise that came out (the recent one, not the one before that with the couch jumping), I don't think I really care except as a fascinated observer.
  • If you can see what this:
    ls -R | grep ":$" | sed -e 's/:$//' -e 's/[^-][^\/]*\//--/g' -e 's/^/ /' -e 's/-/|/'
does just by looking at it, then you don't need to go here to have it explained. I knew what it was doing, just didn't get the particulars right.
  • In a "so this is what science reporting for the big networks has come down to" kind of story, ABC News is running an article that says genius is dumbed down once you get married. To my wife: doesn't look like I stood a chance...or...imagine what I'd have been like if we hadn't! (ego and hubris still run strong in the Cummings household, folks)
  • UniverseToday, with nothing much going on right now having already covered giant sunspots, asteroids aiming for Mars, and the ilk, is running an article on moonbases. Who doesn't remember when this was how life was supposed to be by now...? Anyway, they basically push the moonbase as a good staging ground. And some nice artist concept art.
  • io9, which has got to be one of my favorite reads each day, is running today's GTD article, Seven Habits of Highly Efective Spaceship Captains
  • Today's Modern Mechanix gem is a 1934 flight simulator. Pretty cool if you ask me :)
  • Today Lifehacker gives us the top 10 DIY Home projects. If you look at the list, you'll immediately see why I'm including it - number 4 makes the list worth it for me. Mostly because that's what I'm doing in our next home. Only I won't tell the wife and girls that I did it. And then I will finally be able to hide. Wait...the internet's archived??? DAMN IT!! WHY DIDN'T ANYONE TELL ME THIS KEYBOARD WAS ON???

And that's it for this morning. Enjoy!

If you thought this rambled...

About mcummings

Michael is happily married and the proud father of three girls. He acknowledges that that means that as soon as they hit their teens, the bathroom will be lost forever and his hypertension will go through the roof as he hunts down a shotgun. In the meantime, he enjoys tinkering with Linux (former Gentoo dev, w00t), fixing his frankenparts PC, and attempting to write stories that are worthy of reading (a ways to go on that one). Its nice to have aspirations at least :)
