bon echo, bon voyage

Posted by mcummings

After some updates this last weekend I found myself with both firefox-2 and bon echo (the beta  for the next release). Have to say - no thanks. None of my plugins seem to work in it properly, or at least not the flash and java plugins, which is a bit of a pita. bah.

nvidia + xinerama + composite != gnome-terminal

Posted by mcummings

If the above criteria apply to you, disable composite in your xorg.conf. This bit me this week after I returned to my baby gnome and did an upgrade in the process. It's an upstream bug, they know about it, but there's something in the above combination that causes gnome-terminal to lose the concept of pixbuf among other things I'm not qualified to speak about. Disabling composite does the trick (and for me at least, was a painless thing to do since I don't even really remember why I enabled it, I don't care for all that eye kandy the kids are into these days anyway)

kde; hosting (unixshell?)

Posted by mcummings

I've given kde the week I promised it. There are, admittedly, a few nice things about kde, and it's certainly an eye catching desktop interface, but as I write this I am in the process of upgrading gnome so I can run back for the hills. I don't think it was always this way, but in my old age (ha) I find my brain is wired to use gnome more easily than I do kde.

After yesterday's hosting fun, I'm inactively looking for a new hosting site (not a top priority, principally because I can't afford the folks that do *exactly* what I want). I was looking at unixshell, which seemed like an affordable vps solution. If anyone else stumbles on this blog post and has experience with them, would you mind dropping me a line to let me know how it worked out?

Things I hate (second try)

Posted by mcummings

The list was longer the last time I tried writing this - now it's down to just 2 items.

First, pair. For the third time in the last six months they've blocked my home IP from accessing their servers, which I *pay* for them to do, is blocked. Why? Because a few years ago wordpress had a vulnerability in the xmlrpc script, so now they periodically block me for using it to post to my blog with. Bah.

Second, folks that take the time to post a bug report to tell you something you've written is useless and broken. Nothing constructive, a brief description of his problem, and it's useless. You'd think I'd be mature enough to handle this simple criticism of g-cpan - but I'm not, it still smarts. Bah.

Third...no third thing this time around, we all know my house sucks money and time.

Off to bed for me. Maybe I'll wake up and pair will magically have recanted the error of their ways. hah.
