clean up -and mythtv :)

Posted by mcummings

spent most of the active part of my day cleaning up dev-perl, updating packages, finally removing perl-core/ExtUtils-MakeMaker from the flotsam. (yay). I'd still like to take a whack at a few of the outstanding bugs on g-cpan, but instead I let myself get sidetracked this evening - and discovered I had two sound cards, the one I've been playing with and a completely muted one for the tvcard. Dohl. Yeah. Turned up the capture volume from 0, ran transcode, and presto. Freevo still flaked on me, and gv4l wasn't happy either (but I could do it manually, so I knew I was almost there) - but mythtv worked without a charm (plus that nice little tvguide app, even if the channels are off by 1 digit). Ten minutes later and mcummings is going to be sampling those shows that are on too late usually :) (ironically, I've put all this effort into it because it was there, not because I'm a big TV watcher or my tv time was in jeapordy or anything).

OK, more work to do, but maybe tomorrow? Need to relax before Monty Python comes on, maybe read some Stephenson while the kids beat on me some more.

garrrrrggghhhh (tv card: no sound)

Posted by mcummings

i don't get it...i can watch tv just fine with sound (xdtv, xawtv, tvtime, all of em work fine - even mplayer), but for the life of me i can't record anything with sound. i've tried mencoder, transcoder, freevo and mythtv (in case they had any insightful tricks). I've tried gtvtime. consistently, i can record tv just fine - minus the volume. gah.

linux link tech show :)

Posted by mcummings

got to be on the linux link tech show tonight - cool :) minus a few initial technical problems (only 2 could call into asterisk), pretty cool to be on the show tonight. I was having a wee bit of latency, and I think in the end even just the three of us that were left weren't sure who should jump first to answer a question - so there's a bit of dead air that'll be cut out in post-edit we hope :) i've got to say i expected something a little harsher - even as a listener of the show, i thought they went pretty easy on us (maybe because there were so many of us...?)

mostly afk today through wed

Just a real quick note - i'll be in "management training" (yay the joys of middle management) today through wednesday, so I'll only be checking in on my irc logs and email at night. guess that makes me about as responsive as normal ;)

short series of updates

Posted by mcummings

Since it's been a few days since I blogged (gah, over half a week) a quick rundown on changes, updates, etc :) First and foremost, of course, is that my new amd64 box absolutely rocks the Casbah, and thanks to Anarchy thunderbird now launches firefox like it should :)

* Some bumps with the perl-module eclass - basically an old bug resurfaced and required some re-tweaking, all of it related to Module::Build support
* Fixed the 'die's in the eclass as well - modules were claiming to be installed by portage even if the build had died
* a few g-cpan bug fixes. I have a couple more I want to do before rc3, and it's looking (from the scrolling stream of output) that I'm going to have to buckle and get versioned deps into the generated ebuilds (ack). I foresee a few bugs coming out of that, chiefly if the dep is for something we haven't bumped yet in portage, but that part of the beast will need to be addressed later.

Couple of other things, I'm sure, but I can't think of what they are at the moment...
